Clarabal Captures Danao 3-15-3 Triathlon Crown

After dominating the 3rd leg of the Speedo NAGT Series in Cagayan de Oro City last September 20, 2009, Elmo Clarabal flashed his form in the recently concluded Danao 3-15-3 Triathlon yesterday at the Sands Beach Resort to capture the overall crown.

Clarabal took advantage of the low tide as he set a new course record of 37:16 breaking the previous course record by Gerry Calinawan of 37:54 which was set last March 29, 2009. Strong swimmers were not able to build a decent lead during the 300 meter swim as close to 40 participants were able to walk/run most of the swim course.

The ensuing 15k bike and 3k run was a battle between Clarabal and the tandem teams of Fatboy Slim composed of Lloyd Debalucos and Frederick Pahanonot and Team PLDT of Clark Arche and Ruel Binolirao as they traded leads en route to Clarabal prevailing for the top finish.

Ralph Martin Sios-e abandoned the mountain bike category as he barge in 2nd place overall with 40:23 along with Jenerrey Simbajon with 41:10 to finish 3rd.

Fatboy Slim bested 5 other teams in the Tandem Category to finish 1st place in 38:54. Team PLDT was in 2nd spot at 40:55. Team PII composed of Johann Paz and Ruben Pilapil emerged 3rd with 42:39.

Youngest triathlete Vince Mahinay was unchallenged in the Juniors (19 below) category as he topped his age group with 51:16. Kristian Cabahug was the fastest in the Seniors 20 with 42:03 and was trailed by James Noval in 2nd with 43:50. Meljohn Tezon came in 3rd spot for his 46:42.

The Seniors 30 saw Edmar Osing getting 1st place in 42:59. Occupying 2nd spot was Jhun Omero in 43:17 and come backing Eugene Sanchez captured 3rd place in 45:59.

The mountain bike category was ruled by Lyndon Pongallo with a time of 42:41. At 2nd place was Jezreeh Ramoneda in 44:01 and Warren Ceballos came in 3rd at 46:50.

Cesar Telan defied age as he was declared champion in the Masters division with 48:55. Dioscoro Remata followed suit in 52:07 to place 2nd while Antonio Veloria placed 3rd at 52:28.

The race was made possible by Councilor Boying Rodriguez, Danao Sports Commission and Sugbu Triathlon. Up next is the 2nd Holiday Gym & Spa Indoor Triathlon on Nov. 14, 2009. For more news, please visit www.sugbutriathlon.com.
